Alexander Calder-Inspired Emotional Abstract Sculpture

For this project, students studied the abstract sculpture of Alexander Calder. As a class, we discovered and discussed the characteristics of abstraction in artwork. Students considered ways to convey meaning in their artwork without using recognizable imagery. Students then chose a specific emotion to represent through their abstract sculptures. Using aluminum wire and tissue paper, students created mobiles and stabiles that communicate their chosen emotions through line, shape, form, and color.
