Ancient Egyptian Style Canopic Jars
Students began this lesson by researching the practices of Ancient Egyptian burial rites. Students learned about the significance of Canopic Jars as vessels for holding sacred parts of the body for the journey to the afterlife. Students then imagined themselves as residents of Ancient Egypt and brainstormed about what they would want to bring to the afterlife. Student designed their own Canopic Jars to hold their possessions and created a figurines for the lids to protect the contents. The students used clay handbuilding techniques to create their coil pots. To complete their designs, students glazed their Canopic Jars.
